In the rainforest lives a tiny frog, the coqui. Just two inches big, his nocturnal song fills the air with his own name, “ko-kee, ko-kee.” According to legend the words mean “I love you.” He sings to attract a mate and renew the cycle of life.
But frogs’ lives are in trouble. Globally, their populations have sharply decreased in the last 30 years. More than 120 species are already extinct just since the 1980s.
Because their unique skin takes in water and oxygen, they warn us when the environment is sick. Frogs are dying from epidemic disease and are found with deformities. They are sensitive to pollutants in the air, land and water, global warming and UV-B radiation from our depleted ozone layer.
Why care about the frogs? Frogs are vital to people. Chemicals from their skin provide medicines and help in cancer research. Their absence is also a critical threat to global biodiversity – a serious break in the ecosystem that affects all living things. TEMO wants to change that, and do our part for a greener planet.
